New imagers often spend most of their budget on the telescope and camera, then put them on whatever mount is left over. It is the most common expensive mistake in the hobby. A good mount with a modest telescope produces sharp images. An overloaded mount with a premium telescope produces trailed stars and a frustrating night.
Why the mount comes first
Deep-sky images are built from exposures of 60 to 300 seconds each, stacked over hours. For that to work, the mount has to track the sky’s rotation smoothly enough that a star stays on the same pixel, or within a pixel or two, for the whole exposure. At a typical imaging scale of 2 arcseconds per pixel, that is a tolerance smaller than a coin seen from a kilometer away.
Wind, vibration, poor balance and an overloaded gear train all show up as elongated stars. You cannot fix that in processing. The mount is also the part you are least likely to replace: telescopes and cameras change as your interests grow, but a solid mount carries them all.
The payload rule of thumb
Manufacturers quote a rated payload, often optimistically. For deep-sky imaging, keep your total imaging payload under about 65% of the rated capacity. Count everything that rides on the mount: telescope, rings, dovetail, camera, filter drawer, guide scope, guide camera, focuser motor, dew heaters and cables.

The margin also covers what the numbers do not: longer tubes catch more wind than short ones of the same weight, so treat a long refractor or Newtonian as heavier than it is.
Three types of mount
Star trackers
Examples: iOptron SkyGuider Pro ($458), Star Adventurer GTi ($735). Prices are US list prices as of September 2026; AstroSight shows the local price.
Trackers are compact, light and run on small batteries. They are perfect for a camera and lens, or a small refractor like the Askar FMA180 Pro. The SkyGuider Pro tracks in one axis only, so you find targets by hand. The Star Adventurer GTi adds GoTo and a declination motor, which also makes autoguiding possible. Both reach their limit quickly with anything longer than about 250 mm focal length.
GoTo equatorial mounts
Examples: HEQ5 Pro ($1,485), EQ6-R Pro ($2,175).
These use worm gears and counterweights. They are heavy but proven, well documented and easy to service. The HEQ5 Pro is the classic first serious mount; it handles an 80 mm refractor with guiding and a cooled camera comfortably.
Harmonic (strain-wave) mounts
Examples: ZWO AM3 ($1,599), ZWO AM5N ($1,999).
Harmonic drives carry large loads relative to their own weight and often need no counterweight. The AM5N rates 13 kg without one. They are much easier to carry and set up than an equatorial mount of similar capacity. The trade-off is periodic error: harmonic mounts have more short-term tracking wobble than a good worm gear, so autoguiding is effectively required for long exposures.

Add a guide scope and camera, a controller or mini PC, a dew heater and power for the last two rigs.
Why these pairings work
- The FMA180 Pro is a 180 mm focal length refractor that weighs very little, so it keeps a tracker well within its margin while framing large nebulae and the Milky Way’s star clouds.
- The RedCat 51 gives 250 mm with excellent star shapes to the corners, near the upper limit for a tracker.
- The Evostar 72ED on an HEQ5 Pro leaves plenty of headroom for guiding gear and a filter such as the Optolong L-eNhance ($229) for suburban nebulae.
- The Esprit 80ED with an APS-C cooled sensor on an AM5N is a rig many imagers never need to replace.
A note on Newtonians
The Sky-Watcher 130PDS ($339) is a cheap, fast 650 mm telescope and a popular upgrade path. It is light enough for an HEQ5 Pro, but its tube catches wind and it needs a coma corrector and regular collimation. It is a good second telescope rather than a first.
Before you buy
- Decide your targets first. Large nebulae suit 180 to 400 mm; small galaxies want 500 mm or more, which in turn wants a heavier mount.
- Check your sky. From a city, narrowband nebulae work well; galaxies struggle. See the Bortle scale guide.
