What it’s good at
A 20 kg payload at 5.5 kg total weight is the AM5N’s whole pitch: it can carry a mid-size APO refractor (like the Esprit 100ED) or a small Schmidt-Cassegrain with room to spare, and the whole mount fits in a backpack — no counterweights to pack separately, no tripod-and-counterweight-bar assembly at the observing site. For anyone who drives or flies to dark-sky locations, that portability-to-payload ratio is hard to match with a traditional EQ mount.
Where it falls short
Harmonic drives are newer technology than traditional worm-gear EQ mounts, and while ZWO’s published tracking specs are strong, worm-gear mounts at a similar price (like the EQ6-R Pro) have a much longer track record among imagers for long-exposure guiding accuracy at longer focal lengths. At $1,999 it’s also a meaningful step up from tracker-class mounts, so it only makes sense once you’re committed to a heavier telescope.
Who should buy it
Imagers who already know they want a mid-to-large APO refractor or compact SCT, and who prioritize packability for travel or dark-sky trips over the very long track record of traditional worm-gear mounts. If your telescope stays permanently set up at home and travel weight isn’t a concern, an EQ6-R Pro carries the same payload for roughly $200 less.
