The Seestar S50 Pro is ZWO’s replacement for the original Seestar S50, and it is the smart telescope most beginners land on in late 2026. It keeps the S50’s 50 mm aperture and 250–260 mm focal length but jumps to an 8.3 MP 1/1.2″ sensor, adds an EQ tracking mode for exposures up to 60 seconds, and ships with a 9-hour battery.

What it’s good at
The bigger sensor over the original S50 means less cropping and a wider field, which matters for larger targets like the Andromeda Galaxy or the Pleiades. EQ mode with 60-second subs is a real upgrade for faint nebulae — the old S50 topped out at 10-second exposures in alt-az mode, which limited how much signal it could gather per frame. The built-in dual-band filter still does the heavy lifting for emission nebulae from light-polluted skies, and setup is still just “open the app, tap go.”
Where it falls short
50 mm of aperture is still 50 mm — planets show as small, soft discs rather than the banded detail a 90 mm-plus telescope or a dedicated planetary camera can pull out. It’s also a step up in price from the S30 line, so it’s competing with entry-level traditional rigs (a used DSLR and a star tracker) that can outresolve it on deep-sky targets, at the cost of far more setup effort.
Who should buy it
Beginners who want nebulae, galaxies and star clusters with zero setup learning curve, and who value grab-and-go portability over maximum resolution. If planets are your main interest, look at the Unistellar eQuinox 2 or a traditional Maksutov-Cassegrain instead. If you already own a mirrorless camera and don’t mind a mount and a laptop, a star-tracker rig at a similar price will out-resolve it on deep sky.
